HELP!!! My transmission in my '87 528e 5sp was stuck in reverse. I took the trans out and after some work got the nut off the back but now I can't get the back housing (case?) off. Is it because it's stuck in reverse? Is there any way I can get it open to see what's wrong? I'm trying to do the work myself but I'm stuck. Any help is appreciated.

the gearbox will not come apart if it's not in neutral. i don't know if you know what you're in for, and i mean in no way to offend you, but it would be more worthwhile to go and either get someone who is familiar with that particular gearbox to rebuild it, or go the route of used, or remanufactured. it sounds like the reverse gear operating sleeve is stuck, and by the time you get the thing apart, find and buy the parts(does needle in a hay stack mean anything to you?), put it back together, put it back into the car and find out that something is still not rite you'll be insane! i strongly recommend leaving this to the pros! i work on bmw's professionally and i will not get into a Getrag rebuild... they never work the same after they are opened.

if you're interested, i have a getrag 265 5-speed which is in very good shape, very reliable and very stong for sale for $400. hellouva better price than even rebuilding yourself.

let me know if i can help in any way
