You can't just unbolt the rear cover and expect it to come off. Do you have a Bentley manual? Get one of these, first!! It gives full rebuild procedures for the 260 and 265 gearboxes, which involves many complicated procedures such as heating bearing races, pulling gears off with a 12-ton press, shifting the tranny into a certain gear to get the rear cover back on, etc. I've never done a rebuild on a Getrag, but I've tried. I gave up when no one had a puller pig enough to get the front case off, and I didn't have the tools to make the correct puller. This is an incredibly labor intensive problem, so save yourself a lot of trouble and get a used or rebuilt tranny. It's a helluva lot quicker, too.

I consider myself an experienced shade-tree mechanic. I've spent countless hours working on M3s, E12s, E30s, and E28s. But I'll leave differntial and transmission rebuilds/internal repairs to a qualified shop.
