Just bought an 83 528 in good shape, but has a seriously sloppy shifter. So much so that to get in reverse, the shifter bangs into the center console side and is starting to leave a dent. Also does the same problem going into second. The dealer parts guy said it's either the upper bushings, or if that doesn't fix it,I would have to replace the whole gearshift lever. The Haynes manual doesn't get into enough detail to do this and I don't have a Bently. Do I have to remove the aluminum cover plate under the carpet matting(which is really glued in tight)or do I have to get to it from underneath the car? If you have done this yourself, I could really use your expertise right about now, as the dealer said it would only take an hour or two to do. I'm thinking I should be able to do this myself, right?

It isn't that big of a job. I did it about 1 year ago on my 535. Most of the work is done from the top. There is a bushing in the joint that slips onto the trans selector lever that is a good idea to replace. I also replaced that seal which wasn't easy. I had to drop the exhaust to gain room. The bently book is well worth the $100.00or so. Ed
