The block casting is exactly the same. Now, the differences that you will notice are the fact that the aluminum bosses that bolt to the front of the motor to hold the accessories are different on the E28 and the E34. You will also note that the pistons are different. The cranks are the same and the bore is the same. What I would do is get some custom pistons and bore the block out. I MEAN BORE IT OUT. While I have not personally bored a block, I have heard you can bore it all the way out to 94mm. All you then have to do is use the E12 head gasket and you will also need to have the combustion chambers on the E34 head diameter matched, but that can easily be done by the shop that resurfaces the head and also does the valve job and ports the head. I have been doing the calculations and the way I plan to build my M30, when I have the cash, will make over 280bhp and 280 foot lbs or torque.
