An E34 ///M5 wont be cheaper to maintain than a low end E39. I don't buy that for a second. While the ///M5 may ba A LITTLE cheaper on the front end, the maintenance will be higher by far, all things being equal and normal. I preface this with the assumption on the posters part that is appears he dosen't do his own maintenance.]

Neither one. I'd go for an E34 M5. Much more modern and faster than the E28 and much less expensive and faster than the 530i.

I'm not paying for his maintenance, but it will no doubt be higher than the E39. I have seen E34 M5s going from the low $20K range to the mid $30Ks. One was for sale at Sebring last w/e with Dinan everything for $33K. That will barely get you into a 330i, much less a 530i. It would be a helluva lot more fun, too.
