Purely personal decision. The one thing you will never get back when you give up the E28 is the raw, tossable, connected to the car/road feeling. The new cars are so amazingly solid, tight, and quiet, that in my opinion you feel very isolated. The clutch is very soft, and steering is a bit too numb for my taste. I was fortunate enough to borrow my dad's E39 540i 6spd for 6 months, and it is an amazing car. But a completely different beast than the E28. I would pick my E28 M5 any day over the 540 (which is what I did, bought the M5 and gave him back the 540). A third consideration would be to get a very nice low miles E28 M5 for 20k or so.
