Under the steering column on the e12, there is a bolt with no head. When you put it in the head shears off. It leaves a cone shaped flange. You have to take a chisel and back this bolt out of the housing. Don't know if this is the same on yours, but worth a look-see. It is done this way to deter theft. Look for a cone shaped head with a shallow angle on it about half inch in diameter. You can see about a 1/8 inch flat spot where the hex head sheared off on tightening.
