I just upgraded to a Blaupunkt Toronto CD head unit. I have my old '87 535is stereo. The only problem is the right channel has static sometimes. The static is dependent on the volume knob position. Electrical contact cleaner helped, but I found a good deal on the Blau, so I just took it out. I'm sure more contact cleaner would do the trick. Let me know if you are interested.
