well until the officionados respond, I'll say that it's likely as I had leaks in my '82 733i and my friend had leaks in his 3 series same era. There was a drain from roof to footwell in 3 series. Neither of my 5's leak, so a seal might be weak around the widnshield on your vehicle. If you're going to maintain the car yourself, my recommendation is to purchase a reputable manual. Ever since I got the Bentley's I have slept better, as I can find troubleshooting guides, concise instructions, black and white pictures and more! Actually the only part that I need descript pictures guidance on is replacing the heater core and it's not covered as detailed as I need it to be. But that's ok.
Anyway, my manual is out in the cold, otherwise I'd read up on your topic and respond more effectively.

Fellows, I aquired a '86 535i 5spd, 126k with many wet spots. I have read the archives about all the various sources for leaks but never found out if there are any drains for the cowl area below the windshield. Anyone help?
