In Reply to: 528e and Turn Signal and cold--They don't work- posted by Mike M. on February 18, 2001 at 20:31:54:

My '87 528e runs great--even in zero degree weather. However, as soon as the temp drops and the car is first started up--the turn signals and high beams do not function. When the car warms up--they work fine. What's the deal? Is their a common solenoid or relay that they all run off of?

On my 87 528e, I replaced the turn signal relay and that cured my turn signal problem. I suspect that both of your relays may be messing up. There was a sticky gunk like sticky, mostly dried soda on my relays. I guess it was either spilt beverage from the previous owner or 15 year old lube of some kind which may have worked it's way into the relay. Here is a thought: go to Autozone and get a spray can of electrical contact cleaner and remove the relays and then hose them out with it. May clean your relays and then you wont have to buy new ones at around $35 or so each.

Also, as soon as I turn on the lights, the CHECK comes on in the center in the dash and I have to acknowledge different error lights. They are usually the license plate light or the brake lights even though both are fine. Where is the most obvious place for a short?

Not sure, try removing each of the bulbs and use sandpaper of a medium or finer grit and sand the contact points as much as you can. VERY POSSIBLE that a light amount of oxidization is causing a drop in voltage which the check circurity picks up as a bad buld. I have known two other E28 owners that this has been the case. You may want to think about replacing the bulbs as well.

One more electrical glitch---the warning light for the coolant level comes on after time or under semi-hard acceleration. Is this the sending unit or the sensor itself?

This is usually the sensor. I replaced mine just over 7 days ago for just the same behavior. Parts of it deterioriate over a decade. Cost me around $22.
