I went through that routine, and I think you got the adjustment procedure right. I had to remove the motor to resync it with the sunroof panel.

The interior trim panel isn't too hard to remove. Open the sunroof, remove the wind deflector (pop out the side braces first), including the metal strip and all the screws along the leading edge of the sunroof opening. Remove the sun visors, and enough of the door frame trim to allow the interior trim panel to drop down. The motor should be easy to remove at this point.

My sunroof is out of synch w/ motor stops - in other words it stops about an inch short of closure, then have to press button again. Archive research indicates that I need to resynch motor, which for E36s at least simply requires "bumping" motor until roof closes fully, then removing access panel and removing motor, cycling motor to proper stop position, and reinstall. Does this work for E28s? It doesn't seem easy to remove motor, appears you have to remove interior trim panel which I have no clue how to do. Anyone have any tips?
