If the car was hot when you were able to stop the fan, then the clutch is shot. Did the electric fan come on? if it didn't you have two more possibilities. 1) the switch or relay is defective or 2) you put the thermostat back on reverse so the spring coil is on the radiator side and doesn't get hot enough to open. The fan clutch is easily replaced and should cost around 100$. Ivan 88 635 CSI
