Beta is still widely used professionally these days. The problem was with their licensing to others (i.e. there wasn't any), not the "superiority" of VHS. Similarly, Apple didn't license their system for clones until it was too late, and even then, they rescinded them.
That is, they were superior for their time, but no one bought into it and all the technology and advancements went to VHS. Now, Betamax is a faint memory, but techies will still herald their merits. Sound familiar. There was such an argument with Apple Computer, though not anymore. Chris
