I just can’t understand why everybody thinks RWD is so bad in the snow, when properly equipped with a good set of snow tires, can be as good as AWD.

I love BMWs as much as the next fellow, but a clapped-out 4WD Subaru with bald tires will make the best equipped 2wd BMW look patetic. So will a VW Beetle (a REAL Beetle).

While I agree with you on this point.... For the average consumer (ie live in the city and maybe see upto 6" snow at most) I would agree. A E28 w/good snow tires can handle 60% of the conditions that a 4wd could with the same tires....

BUT I live in up a very steep, 1.5 mi switch backed road rising 1400+ ft to my house. There is no 2wd car that could get there when it's bad out, period! And for that reason I bought an Audi quattro....

I remember one time when we had 2" of ice on everything even then my 4wd car with Hakka studs barely made it.(I had to lock the rear diff going up) The rest of the week I had to use my ukkky Jeep w/studded snows and chains on all 4's.

Then there was the time it was blowing 60+mph, -10 deg F out, 4 ft of new snow and the .5 mile driveway was blowing in faster than I could plow it out...... I ended up walking home for 2 weeks that year.....
