With my car, I've gone into at least 2 snow banks this year alone, which is pretty sad--both at low speeds. I even got stuck in a driveway with 4 inches of snow that didn't even have a 10 degree slope; however, I did have all-seasons on then, but a FWD Saturn made it outta that same driveway with absolutely NO prob(without snow tires). I don't think BMW's are that bad in the snow, but I've gone up hills at 5 mph when my speedo reads 20 when there's snow on the ground. I definitely disagree with you about RWD with good snow tires being as good as AWD tho. Just using logic, that phrase doesn't make sense. In my opinion, which I think it is pretty much a fact, you just cannot beat 4WD in the snow no matter what technological marvels you throw on a RWD car. Cheeers.
