Will that piston that I found work? Your probably
right about it being a different OEM. Even though
at first glance it looked exact, it didnt look
the same as far as, well, texture I guess. Maybe
it was newer.
I have found a piston that looks just like mine.
But Instead of 9197 its 9198 and it has an arrow
on it which after looking at the bently that
just means which way to install. I didnt see
a + on it though, but the arrow confused me
a little so I might have missed it. The guy
wanted $100 for it (used). Is that reasonable?
It seemed high compared to a regular used piston
($30).
Also the ser # on my block is 1284902.
Thanks

Double check that # on the block. BMW didn't issue any chassis or engine numbers between 1280940 and 1285001. Might be a factory replacement engine too, though. $100.00 sounds like a lot for a used piston and with the different bore size marking on the top, it may be from a different OEM manufacturer (Nueral vs, Mahle maybe). New pistons would probably be in the $130-180 range, so I'd keep looking some more.
Good luck,
Matt
