Will that piston that I found work? Your probably
right about it being a different OEM. Even though
at first glance it looked exact, it didnt look
the same as far as, well, texture I guess. Maybe
it was newer.
Well, the plot does thicken. The 1284902 # is the internal BMW part number for the block. The 8 digit number on the starter loop sounds like a serial number for a factory replacement engine to me. The 9197 and 9198 numbers refers to the piston diameter and the + or - on the piston refers to the weight class of the piston. Ideally you'd wan't to find a piston that has identical markings to the others. I'd be concerned the 9198 piston is either going to be too tight in the bore, or it might be just a tad heavier than the others, throwing off the balance of the engine. Due to wear on the pistons walls, the clearance issue might not end up being so much of a problem, though. I'm sure your bores have worn more than .01mm since the engine was built.

I have found a piston that looks just like mine.
But Instead of 9197 its 9198 and it has an arrow
on it which after looking at the bently that
just means which way to install. I didnt see
a + on it though, but the arrow confused me
a little so I might have missed it.
