Rubber "bushing" on shocks? (archive)

I noticed while doing the front brakes on my 87 528e, on both sides there is a cylindrical rubber "bushing" around the shock absorber, inside the spring, which happens to be in bad condition, bit and pieces missing and all. Is this critical to the handling and can I replace this piece alone or does it come with the shocks? Thanks.
