The tool has four tangs that engage under the bushing to twist it out. It looks something like a large version of the spark plug socket in an E28 tool kit.

OK, I'm back for more help. I checked the archives without any luck either. My car is an 88 535is with the aluminum shift console.

I'm having trouble removing the shift lever because I can't get the shift lever retaining ring to turn the required 90 degrees. I get it maybe 45 degrees then it refuses to go any further and the lever will not come out at this point. I've tried needlenose pliers and various screwdrivers. The only thing I've accomplished is to chip some small pieces offthe ring. Anybody have any hints on this one?
TIA.
