The bumpstop doesn't really affect handling, but it does help to keep your struts from being damaged if you bottom out the suspension. I'd forget about doing it until you need shocks since you have to do 95% of the work that you'd have to do when replacing shocks if you're only doing these. They do come separately, and I'd bet that if your shocks aren't original, whoever did them didn't bother to replace the bumpstops at the same time since they weren't in the shock package.


I noticed while doing the front brakes on my 87 528e, on both sides there is a cylindrical rubber "bushing" around the shock absorber, inside the spring, which happens to be in bad condition, bit and pieces missing and all. Is this critical to the handling and can I replace this piece alone or does it come with the shocks? Thanks.
