i'm having the same problem with my 87 volvo 240. i checked and found that the volvo in that model and year is known for having problem with the feul pressure regulator. maybe thats whats wrong with your car cause it sounds similar. a feul pressure regulator is cheap ($46). does anyone know how much a feul pump is?
