braking shudders and slop in middle of steering (archive)

two faults in my receit purchase .
It shudders in front when heavy braking above 50mph sometimes .I surpose it's the front discs any thoughts on this .
There's a little play in the middle of the steering .Is there any simple way of tightning this up or does it need a new steering or something.Any thoughts on this would be apppreciated.
