I found that the braking shudder in my car was caused by the upper control arm bushings, but it could also be the steering arms. As for the slop, it could be caused by the steering arms, but you can also tighten an adjuster on the top of the steering box which should reduce the slop. But remember the E28 also has some on center slop, that is just the nature of the steering. I would check the ball joints and also to see if the upper control arm bushing rubber is cracked or broken.
