Plastic in Oil Pan (archive)

I cracked my oil pan last week and finally got around to fixing it. After a few hours I got the oil pan off and to my surprise there were chunks of plastic in it. I came to the conclusion that this plastic was from the timing chain guards that are now shattered. Are these guards important? Do I need to replace them? How do I go about replacing them? Thanks in advance.
