I take it you have an M30. I would suggest replacing them pronto. The reason why is that if it is the guard it is not too bad, but that means that the tensioner is also probably worn and if you have a worn or broken tensioner then you will end up wrecking the motor eventually. To replace bolt of these parts you have to take off bolt the upper and lower timing chain cover. This is not an easy job, but it can be done by an experienced DIYer. Don't forget to replace all the gaskets.
