I have the opportunity to get a 533i with high mileage (202K) as my next project car. the body is in fair to good condition with only one small visible area of body rust. It is a 5 speed. I have not driven the car yet however, I am coming into BMW land blind for I traditionally work on VW's.

How is this car for performance and what areas are commonly problematic for this car? Is the car a worthy car compared to the 528e or 535i? I would assume the latter two are must faster considering displacement.

After owning two 320s, I picked up a 533i with 271K. It was in good shape, and needed nothing. Got it from an outta work lawyer-he had everything done that needed to be. Drove the car for another 2-3 years, and only had $89 fuel pump into it. Then it got hit by a truck (!). That was the end of that fine car. Drove a POS Saturn Wagon for a while (wedding gift from family). Absolutly hated that! I had to sink 2k into that over the course of 2 years (a whole 'nother story I'll spare you from). Sold that pile of hillbilly garbage. Then bought an 88 535i. Happy ever since.

BTW: The 528e is no hot rod. The 533 kicks its bottom on a absolute basis. You are correct in assuming the 33 and the 35 are similar. From my own findings: The 535 is a little more refined, both inside and out. However, I always will think highly of my old 533! Don't let the milage scare ya. I think they're damned fine cars.

Two questions: How much is the 533 going for? How much of a project will it be? 535's are also a good deal.

BTW: Plenty of info on the 533 in the archives. Good luck, and feel free to contact me via email if you need to. Good luck!!!
