FIX: I am a die hard OEM guy. I have "Bosch" tatoo'd on one arm and "VDO" on the other, so it was very hard to walk in to Pep Boys today and ask for an in-tank pump for a 76 Vega.
"2 or 2.3 litre?" asked the pimply-faced parts counter kid.
"Bring them both," I said.
The pump was about the same diameter as the VDO unit. The computer also recommended that the counter guy bring a filter sock. I wasn't sure how this unit was going to draw fuel when the level in the tank got very low. The VDO unit has a "foot" with the filter on the bottom. I thought about how I could make the foot fit on the Vega unit, but I decided to try it with the sock and see how it works.
The failed in tank pump was original as evidenced by the factory hose clamps. My car has between 130 and 160k miles.
The mounting of the unit was pretty straightforward. The only mods I did were to remove the metal ground strap from the VDO unit by filing off the punched knub. I used this ground strap on the new unit by attaching it to the pump ground terminal and the old draw tube mounting hold with the original screw and clip. I attached the original wire to the positive terminal on the pump with no problem. I wanted to move the pump as low as possible, but the wire wasn't long enough.
After reassembly, I turned the motor over. There was a definate hum coming from the tank. I hopped in and did some full throttle runs and no stumbling, even with only 2 gallons in the tank!
Pretty cool!
