I just entered BMW land myself and could not be happier. Paid 2500 for our (I have to say "our" because I talked my wife into selling "her" 95' Z28 Camaro to get it) 84' 533i with 127k on it and is extremely clean and straight. I'm the third owner and the first two took such good care of the car; The dash has no cracks, the seats and rest of the interior is flawless, all the electronics work correctly. What really sold me was the complete tool kit, complete with BMW rag in the trunk. Only real cosmetic issue is due to the car spending its life until now in Palm Springs so the headlights, driving lights and windshield are sandblasted!

Pete is right, its only been two weeks since I bought it and I'm looking at spending 400-500 to replace all the front end, 200 for a short shift kit, and an unknown amount to get these darn metric wheels and TRX tires off, and little stuff like fuel lines, hoses and the like all add up. But when you're done you have one fine automobile and you'll know why they sold new in 84' for $30k

Have fun with her if you get it...

I have the opportunity to get a 533i with high mileage (202K) as my next project car. the body is in fair to good condition with only one small visible area of body rust. It is a 5 speed. I have not driven the car yet however, I am coming into BMW land blind for I traditionally work on VW's.

How is this car for performance and what areas are commonly problematic for this car? Is the car a worthy car compared to the 528e or 535i? I would assume the latter two are must faster considering displacement.
