The brake warning light most likely comes on because the brake lights are not grounding properly in the trunk. Open your trunk and take off the trunk cover over the tail/brake light area. You will see several sockets containing the tail lights and brake lights. They are mounted (screwed into) to a piece of sheet metal. The place where each light socket mount contacts the sheet metal needs to be cleaned off with some fine sandpaper. As for the service light, you probably need to replace the NiCad batteries on the computer board in the instrument cluster. There are several posts in the archives about how to do this.

I have 1986 528E. The brake lining warning lights keep coming on - even though brake pads are fine. The service needed lights cannot be reset. I was told that this was caused by a computer chip behind instrument cluster. I mechanical illiterate as I am I could use some advise anybody!!
