Shudder in low gears / automatic (archive)

88 535I with 200,000 on it. Originally thought that the shudder or rumble while accelerating in low gear was due to transmission problems. Some comments indicate it could be drive shaft related.

Is there an easy way to check if there is a problem with the transmission or the drive shaft components without taking it to the shop?
