I think the 3.5 stamping on the head is on every 533i. Mine has it and it made me wonder too- now that you mentioned it though, I think we are in the same boat. I think the head is interchangable with the head on an e28 535 engine(same valve covers too). The intake manifold has that stamping of 3.2/3.5 on it, and the block has a stamp of 3.0/3.3 on it. I am guessing that BMW made alot of their parts swappable for the ease of production and maintenance.

How many miles does your car have on it? I have 169k on my 533i- 92k on the new engine. I haven't finished building mine yet, but I can't wait to take it down the road. No more Volkswagen! :-)
