I've heard several times that this is a bad thing to do What damage does it cause...

On any fuel injected car, the fuel in the tank cools the pump. If you make a habit of running the tank dry, the pumps mmay fail prematurely.

I had a case years ago (GM) that the pump would overheat if three conditions were met:

less than 1/4 tank of fuel
over 90 ambient temp.
car was run for more than 1/2 hour.

This was with an aftermarket fuel pump. I replaced it with a factory delco pump anfd the problem disapeared.
