drivers side mirror not working (archive)

This winter my driver's side mirror started running intermittently on it's own, running to the limit and then skipping there. This seemed to happen on damp days. I took the door and mirror apart, cleaned the switch, and thought I had solved the problem, except now the driver's mirror does not move with the switch. It clicks when I move the switch in the up or down position but does nothing in the forward or backward position. The passenger side mirror works fine.
I took the switch apart again and made sure it is clean and everything is making good contact.
