I have an 84 533i that all of a sudden stalls when starting off from a stop . It also drops when you shift to the next gear. like it is lacking fuel. But when at idle, it runs ok (except last night it was surging at idle. This morning it ran fine.Read my Bentley, too many options, any narrowing down help from all of you gurus??
Thanks in advance
Warren

Warren, I just went through this with my '84. I had severe surging at idle, with intermittent stalling. The controller seemed to be sending correct voltage to it, so I took the idle air stabilizer valve out several times, squirting cleaner and silicone spray into it, but to no avail. At any rate, I finally coughed up the cash for a new one (Mesa Performance Parts) and the engine now purrs like a kitten with no stalls or surging. The replacement part is of a much better quality than the one I took out, by the way.

Not sure that this is your problem, but it sure fixed mine. Be sure to check all vacuum lines, and other possible sources of vacuum leaks. Hope this helps. Joe
