If you're looking at an e34 535i engine conversion, there are one or two guys in the gallery that have done this. I believe one is Ian O'Brien with his '87 535iS with Euro bumpers, lights, etc. You might want to refer this question to him (I've got his e-mail address if you want it).
labor and parts costs for the installation (unless one is saavy enough to DIY it), etc.
Saavy enough? Me? HA! But I do know people that ARE. Hmmm. . .
My rough guess is that it would have to run several thousand dollars...YIKES! I'm sure Rob Anderson could help ball park this job nicely for us...
As New Heart says, he's done a LOT to fully carry out this conversion. The engine (of course), the exhaust from the engine to the cat, the e36 transmission, all the guts that need to come with the engine (well, that's just the ECU, I guess). . . it comes to a lot of things. Then, if you sell all of your old stuff -- well, mainly the engine and transmission -- you'll get some of that back.
Do most of it yourself (and with friends, of course), and you'll save a lot. If I were to pay someone to do all of it, I doubt I would do it. I think I remember Dave Kan's site talking about how he would have spent just as much on labor as on the parts to have his auto-to-manual swap performed if he hadn't done most of the gruntwork himself. Just imagine how much it would cost to do the whole engine, transmission, etc. I'm sure the labor would be more than the parts.
I am still VERY interested in this. New Heart, perhaps you would like to give us a few more details? We'll understand if you don't reveal the pricing.
I'm just completely inspired by this, guys. A 130+ MPH 528e. It's surely much quicker, too.
