shimmy from steering wheel when braking (archive)

When I brake, there is a strong shimmy on the steering wheel. It's not the wheels or tires, had those replaced (freed myself of those dreaded TRX's). I also had the brakes inspected including replacement of the front rotors and pads. My mechanic says the shimmy is normal with ABS. I don't think so. This shimmy isn't apparent all the time and only during high speed when slowing down. He did indicate that I should have one of my brake hoses replaced at the front driver's side wheel because it may collapse. Could this be the cause of my steering wheel shimmy?

Also is it wise to remove any ABS relays as described in an earlier posting to defeat the ABS system? I don't feel very comfortable with the way my ABS is functioning on my 86 535i and would rather be able to control the braking myself.
