I appreciate the advice and yes it is soaking in a combination of gear lube and LSD additive right now. It will be about two weeks before I can install the diff., so I'm thinking it ought to be one greased-up, smelly mess(but this is goood!) by the time I get ready for the installation. And again, I can't thank you enough for your follow-up! I've got about 30 years of cars, trucks and heavy equipment experience and I'm always running into something that gives me pause for thought. God knows I've had my moments of stupidity. However, it is truly marvelous to have this board as a resource to keep me on the right path.BTW, what do you drive and where are you located?
Thanks Again!
Dave
Marvel Mystery Oil is rich in solvents, too, but it is also pretty slippery. Recent (relatively recent -- I've been fiddling with cars for almost 50 years) Ford clutch packs come with instructions that the discs should all be soaked in Ford LSD additive overnite before they are stacked together and assembled (so that all surfaces are fully exposed to the stuff). Perhaps (I'm just guessing, you understand!) it would be good to try to give yours a slow bathing in the stuff somehow, if you still have the rear cover off.
