I'm an amateur so take it for what it's worth but could it be time for a new knock sensor? Also, your car is a euro model so *I think* it is missing an 02 sensor which could also be giving you a problem. One other thing could be an improperly adjusted or worn cam chain.

I've got an '87 535 that I can race up and down big hills (Los Angeles area) all day with no knocks.
Just my .01 worth.

Anyone deal with knocking under heavy load in a 535? Only happens on steep uphill grades with my foot firmly planted on the gas pedal.

Car is a 1985 Euro 535 with 216K miles. Runs great otherwise, except for a balky start some of the time.

It gets serious when I had to back off from reeling in the new V8 Audi yesterday.
