I just brought home a Lachsilber '87 535is for my son because he wanted that particular car (He'd also worked his tail off bring home the grades to earn it). The reason he wanted it is because he said nobody else would have one like it. He's right too. He calls it the "Stealth Women Getter" or the Brings Many Women 5er. All his friends think it is the "phattest"(?) car at school. As his father, I think it is cool that he has chosen a less traveled road to "Kar Kewlness" (as his buddies say).

Another adult friend of mine (also a bimmerhead) says he thinks it's really great that my son chose a car whose coolness transends the "me-too" sillyness of high school.

In the end, the driver has to LIKE what he drives and I from your comments I think you do. Bob's advice below is spot-on, upgrade your driving skills and you'll enjoy whatever you drive a lot more. Who knows maybe you can start a drivers school program at your school. From what i've seen, a lot of young (& older) people really need it.

Oh, the upgrades you mention and attention to the looks of the car will go a long way to winning over any doubters.

Good Luck and keep us updated on your progress.

I have an 87 535is that my dad and I bought to fix up. Its in good condition but the real fixing hasnt started yet. I would like your opinion as to whether this would be a cool car or not a cool car for a high school kid to drive. For some background info i go to a school where every kid when they get their license is expected to be bought a brand new BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Audi, Jaguar etc.... Right now im 15 and im trying to decide if its worth it to fix up. The fixig up would include new paint(royalblau metallic), interior re-dye(pearlbeige), and some of the more common upgrades for example a chip, bigger wheels tires, short shift, possibly a performance exhaust and high grade sound system. What do you guy's and gal's think? Cool for me or not? I appreciate any opinions. Thanks
