Converted my '86 535i from an automatic to a 5 speed after the auto began acting up.

I bought all of the trans components, driveshaft, pedals, shifter, etc. from an ad here at the Bimmer forum site (thanks, Chris!). Was roughly $550 plus $150 shipping. Also, used as many new components as possible (all clutch parts, center driveshaft bearing and guibo, bushings, all new seals, slave and master, hoses, etc.). That stuff added up to another $500 or so.

Took about a day and a half to get done, in my garage, working alone. I am a little sore and battered, but it was not that bad. The first day I worked from 9 in the morning to midnight, though. Was finished by around 2 in the afternoon the next day.

It is an all bolt in project. There is one bracket in the shifter tunnel that can be welded in, but I simply drilled and bolted it in. It is not that complicated, its just a lot of things to bolt on and off. With 2 people, the job would go a lot faster.

Wow, what a difference! The car is really transformed. So much quicker, more fun to drive, it even sounds different for some reason. I wish my automatic would have given out earlier!

I'm going for a drive!!
