My hitch started out as a class I Reece hitch that was supposed to fit many cars (except BMW) I made spacers, longer hitch bar (and thikcer) and a new brace to put inside the trunk. I couldn't get the hitch square under the car, so it's to the right about 1/2" but works great. This is my beater car, so I'm not the most worried about details. I could post some pictures if anyone's interested. My total cost for the hitch was as follows...
$40 @ wal-mart for the reece hitch
$10 @ the local restraunt for brekfast biscuts for the machine shop guys that helped to eat :-)
3 hours of my time to make it fit.
I just pulled my trailer for the first time with my e28 today. I was impressed! A bone stock 528e with 227k on the clock, the only mod is a 3.25 differential. The trailer was a 2000 lb boat trailer. I got 22mpg for the trip too. Way better in all aspects of towing than my ford ranger was.
anyone else have trailer towing experience with a bimmer?
This is great news. I ordered a Class 1 receiver hitch for my '85 535i last week (arrives today) with hopes of pulling my 17' boat & trailer. The hitch is made by Da'Lan. If anyone is interested, I'll post my experiences with installation.
