I have a 1988 BMW 535i. I have previously owned a 1987 535is. The two motors looked a little different (mainly the way the cruise control unit looked). My friend has a 1988 735i and his motor looks exactly like the one in my 535i, but different from the motor in my 1987 535is. Is there a chance that I have the higher HP motor in my 1988 535i? It sure feels like it.

Only if someone put an '88 735i engine in. Even though BMW sold '88 535i's in the US, the E28 was out of production in Europe in '87, and Europe got the the E35 5 series in '88 where we had to wait until '89 to get the same car. All '88 e28's are essentially '87 models. '88 owners, look at your production date if you don't believe me. The '88 and up 3.5L engines had bigger valves, a mass air flow meter (and new Motronics) and may have had higher compression.
