Pull the boot up from the trim around the shift lever and look inside for the wires coming off the reverse switch. I'll bet the cable has been compromised by rubbing against the shifter and you're shorting either the two wires together or on or more to the chassis steel.

BTDT.

Hello, I've had my '86 535i for about two weeks now and I've got my first question.

State inspection process showed that I have no reverse lights (5 spd) and it is not the bulbs. I've ordered a reverse switch for the transmission, but here's the weird part...if I shift into reverse with the lights on, I blow the number 9 fuse. I didn't think the #9 fuse had anything to do with the reverse lights, just taillights, sides, etc.

I can shift into reverse w/o the lights on the the fuse is OK, also lights on in a forward gear is OK. Any idea where these systems interact other than at the taillight assembly and ground at the back?

Thanks.
