I used a 10mm open end out of the BMW tool kit. I do have a 535i (the wrenches are a bit thinner). It's true that you can't get a good grip on it, but thankfully mine wasn't too tight, and the bolts came out easily by hand after being loosened. I worked from the bottom of the intake manifold.
