I'm sure you all saw the news item. Apparently they have halted production of the new Thunderbird because the engine seems to have overheated in a few cases. The cars have yet to be delivered, so no consumers were effected.

Still, it sad for Ford, really. They've had so many problems of late. It's ridiculous to me to think of a car getting to this stage with such a MAJOR malfunction. Not that BMW is immune to it (check the X5 site for talk of spontaneous combustion related to the auxillary fan), but how in the world could this happen? And the fit and finish on these cars has never really approached the imports, Japanese or other.

I had just seen a report (CNN or 60 minutes) on the CEO incharge of the production of this model. She was an interesting lady with some heavy experience in the automotive industry and other large corporations. One of the final points she brought up was that in the wake of the Firestone disaster, Ford absolutely has to get this one right to win back the hearts and minds, as it were, of the consumer.

I guess it's a small victory that they fixed it before they rolled into a showroom near you (not that anyone here would buy one, I think). Still, the state of (most) American cars may have made some improvements in the last 15 years, but it seems to me that they are unwilling or unable to compete on the world market. And this is not good press for Ford.

My $0.02.
