The e28 ventilation system does not send hot air out the midlevel dash vents or the large center vent on top of the dash. Heat only comes out the defrost vents at the base of the windshield, and the footwell vents.

The heater valve in the engine compartment on the firewall is either open or closed. It's never partially opened. To force it fully open (max. heat) unplug the electrical connector from the valve. Still no heat? Probably a bad valve core. It will cost you about $30 to rebuild it yourself and find out. Other less likely possibilities are plugged hoses, or a bad heater core (yuck!)

Related, but not exactly the same...I noticed this morning when I went to use my heat for the first time this year that I have NONE. I have plenty of outside air (also the middle control does nothing now) and my AC works like a charm, but I have absolutely no heat, regardless of settings. I'm wondering if my heater control valve has gone south? I haven't yet had a chance to get under the hood and test stuff, but i fanyone has any ideas they'd be welcome...
