I have put several hundred thou on BMW's and never had an alternator fail. I have had brushes wear out and regulators fail though. Alternators fail by either not working at all or not putting out enough amps, regulators control the voltage, I have lots of spare parts and get up to a full volt or so difference between different regulators. Plus it's a lot easier to change.
