New Fan Clutch went out (archive)

I just replaced the fanclutch in my 85 528e, car still ran hot so I broke down and got a new radiator, now the fan clutch is out (I can stop it with my hand w/ engine at 3/4 temp). Are those things that volatile? Is this common, could I have just gotten a bad new fan clutch?
