If your 86 E28 is an i or is, you can reset the SI lights by jumping pins 1 and 7 of the 15-pin diagnostic connector (located near the front of the intake manifold). To reset the oil lights, jump pins 1 and 7 and then turn on the ignition (don't start the car though) for about 5 seconds and then the lights will go out - turn off the ignition. If you leave the ignition on for another 5 seconds or so, the inspection lights will be reset.

I don't know wheter early 528e cars use the 15 pin connector. Later models use the 20 pin connector that is common to 89-95 E36 and E32 bimmers.
