I should say that I have an '86 535i, which does not have this device (the service reminder switch) or an O2 warning light. But I think the device you're pointing out is the service reminder switch. There's a switch on this box you have to push to reset it.

In answer to your question, this device counts out some number of miles (30,000? 50,000?) and then closes a contact, turning on the O2 light. The electric motor powers the odometer. If you unplug this device, the O2 light should go out.

I don't think this is your problem, though. The fact that the O2 light is on even though the service reminder switch is unplugged tells me the problem is that the fuse in the speedometer is blown.

Hey is that the 2' x 2' box with what looks like an small electric motor sticking out of it?

The item I am refering to is located behind the drivers kick pannel just above your right lower leg and to the right of the steering column with an electrical plug in it.

What ever this thing is I found mine unhooked???
Reinstalled the little plastic plug and have noticed no differance in anything. What is it and why would someone unhook it?

Thanks

Greg
